LET YOGA FOR KIDS UNWIND MIND AND BODY TO MULTIPLY WELLNESS
Today’s sedentary lifestyle means many children spend a lot of time interacting with their electronic devices or playing computer games rather than spending time outdoors and taking part in physical activities. In addition, increased pressure on children to perform at school can lead to higher levels of stress and anxiety.
This is why this year’s International Yoga Day that took place at Wanderers on Saturday, 22 June 2019, included three yoga sessions for kids. The sessions were facilitated by seasoned yoga instructors and adapted for younger participants.
The event was a collaboration between Momentum Multiply, Yoga Works and the Consulate General of India and included outdoor yoga sessions, live music and a food and yoga products market.
Elaine Holmes, Head of Marketing and Growth at Momentum Multiply says, “Momentum Multiply cares about the physical and mental wellbeing of members and their children. “We understand the role that movement and mindfulness can play in helping to create balance in their lives, which is why we associate with events such as International Yoga Day.”
The children’s sessions were included to promote a healthy and active lifestyle amongst children. “Children derive enormous benefits from yoga. Physically, it enhances their flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. In addition, their concentration and sense of calmness and relaxation improves,” adds Holmes.
Steven Heyman of Yoga Works says children have a great connection to their bodies and how they move. “Movement comes naturally to children, which is why they need to be discouraged from spending all day on a couch, clocking up screen time on their mobile devices.
“Children are also less fearful than adults when it comes to moving their bodies. Tell them that they need to be upside-down for the next yoga move and they get excited. Adults, on the other hand, will probably feel more cautious and may decide not to try the move,” he adds.
He says the yoga sessions on Saturday included fun elements such as stories and references to animals. “While not many studios offer yoga for children, the important thing is that they move. Whether its rolling around on the ground, playing with the dog or going for a walk, movement places them in a better position to handle whatever comes their way.”
